They don’t make your hair curly, and my children don’t like them either – but they deserve a better fate than the trash can nevertheless! Save them and money by converting them into this pantry staple.
Bonus: You can identify your oven hot spots while doing this too!
Zero-Waste Bread Crust Crumbs
Description
These crumbs are a great binder as-is, or can be used to make a gremolata for topping your favorite casseroles.
Ingredients
Instructions
Prepare
-
Seal and chill bread crusts and/or ends until there are enough to fill a baking tray.
Bake
-
Bring crusts and/or ends to room temperature. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 350°F/180°C. Then, place scraps cut-side-up on tray.
-
Bake 15 minutes. Check for total dryness, then bake 5 more minutes if needed. Continue to check and bake in 5-minute intervals until all pieces are thoroughly toasted.Absolute desiccation is required for pantry stability. Eliminate all moisture now to prevent mold later! Moreover, remove smaller pieces as you bake to avoid burning them.
Blend
-
Blitz dried scraps in a blender or food processor.
I don't recommend putting them in a zip-top bag and smashing them as the intermediary shards will make holes in the bag, and in turn, a giant mess!
Store
-
Transfer to an airtight container and use as desired.
